CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

“When is something supposed to happen?”

Liam’s voice cut through Jerry’s thoughts. He’d been trying to figure out the exact percentage of neurotoxin he’d diluted. He’d sort of winged it, which wasn’t at all like him.

At the last second, he’d taken the bottle out of Jennifer’s hand, still half full.

Then they’d sat there for several minutes, both boys staring and waiting.

She finally stood and yelled, “Quit looking at me!”

“Maybe you should get dressed,” Jerry said, and she stomped away.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Liam asked again.

“I gave her a very weak dose,” Jerry said. “Do you want to stop?”

Liam frowned, obviously thinking on his answer. “No,” he finally said with some uncertainty. “I’d like something good to come out of this.”

Jennifer returned, dressed in jeans and a pullover sweater. She’d brushed her hair. She didn’t seem to have the least idea how good she looked. She plopped into her spot at the end of the couch and turned on the TV.

“I’m not missing Doctor Who,” she said.

Jerry watched her carefully, running the dosage numbers in his head again. When he came back to the present, he knew he’d phased out.

“How long have I been sitting here?” he asked, panic weaseling its way through him.

“A few minutes. I’ve been trying to get your attention.”

Jerry looked at the bottle of elixir on the table next to Jennifer, then opened his backpack and pulled out a fresh bottle instead.

He hesitated. His usual caution was returning. As exciting as the effect of the snake poison was, there was no way of knowing what the long-term effects would be.

If I wait any longer, the old Jerry will overrule me.

He drained the bottle. His thoughts begin to clear almost immediately, and he grabbed the remote and turned the TV off.

Jennifer leapt up from the couch, eyes blazing. “Give me that! Right now!”

“Drink this,” he said, handing her the half-empty bottle

She stared at both him and Liam defiantly, then snorted and downed it.

Jerry calculated that she’d taken at least as much elixir as he had the first time, but she was more severely autistic. He turned away from her to speak with Liam. “What do you think? Maybe a little more?”

“I don’t think…” Liam began to say.

There was a loud gasp on the couch behind them. Jennifer was rigid, her arms and legs sticking straight out, her jaw clenched, her eyes rolling back into her head.

Liam reached her first, putting his hand under her head. Jerry reached under her legs, and they lifted her and laid her on the couch.

“Jesus, is this how I looked?” Jerry asked.

“Worse,” Liam said. “You were actually thrashing and foaming at the mouth.”

As if on cue, saliva started running out of the sides of Jennifer’s mouth, and her arms and legs began to twitch. Her head jerked from side to side.

Then, as quickly as it had begun, the fit was over. Jennifer grew still. Jerry almost leaned down to listen to her heart. Then she moaned and opened her eyes.
